Why?

So that you can store the Bible in you iPod, USB stick, MP3 / MP4 players, mobile phones. This project was motivated by my newly acquired cheap MP4 player with a simple text reader. The advantages are:

  • no need for PDF reader
  • no need to have expensive PDA or mobile phone. Any older portable device with a text reader will do.
  • resolution would be native text, hence no need to render fonts as graphics like PDF.

But the real motivation is of course:

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. Matthew 24:14

What?

The contents of course is God's Scriptures, also known as The Holy Bible. Specifically, it contains the

  • Old Testament
  • New Testament

In addition, it also contains:

  • Apocryhpa

How?

1. Just click on the link on the left navigation bar to get any of the zip files.

2. Unzip the zip files into your PC.

3. Copy any or all of the txt files into your PDA, Mobile, MP4 player etc.

Contents?

Within each zip file, are various folders named according to the Books in the Bible (eg Genesis, Exodus). Within each folder are the various txt files. Each chapter from each book in the Bible will be a single txt file. For example the files are:

  • Genesis1.txt
  • Genesis2.txt
    • ...............
    • Revelations22.txt

Within each txt file contains all the verses for that chapter. Each verse starts with a line number like:

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Source?

The source is from: http://unbound.biola.edu. The original download contains the entire Bible in one txt file. Hence my project was to parse it and divide it into separate books and chapters.

NEW

Android - It appears that newer versions of Android with voice capability such as Voice Aloud, can have the tablet or smartphone read the bible out to you.
